Sunglasses or ski goggles? The ultimate guide to choosing right

One of the most common questions among skiers —especially in our store— is: should I go for sunglasses or ski goggles?
At Andar Sports Andorra, we’ll help you understand the differences and find what best fits your needs on the mountain.

Ski goggles: maximum protection in the snow

When skiing, goggles offer superior protection, especially against wind, snow, and cold. They cover more of your face and fit perfectly with your helmet for comfort and safety.

Lens types by light conditions:

  • Photochromic: adapt automatically to changing light.

  • Category 1: for foggy or cloudy days.

  • Category 2: for low-light or overcast conditions.

  • Category 3: for sunny days.

  • Category 4: for high-altitude or very bright conditions.

✅ Pros:

  • Full protection from wind and snow.

  • Better fit with your helmet.

  • Safer during falls.

  • OTG models fit over prescription glasses.

⚠️ Cons:

  • Warmer to wear.

  • May fog up (though less with modern tech).

  • Bulkier to carry.

  • Can leave tan lines on your face.

Tip: always try them on with your helmet before buying.

 Sunglasses: all-year versatility

Sunglasses are lighter and more versatile. Great for skiing, ski touring, hiking or trail running year-round.
However, they offer less protection in strong wind or snowstorms.

✅ Pros:

  • Suitable all year long.

  • Light and comfortable.

⚠️ Cons:

  • Less protection from cold and wind.

 In short

If you want maximum protection and comfort, go for ski goggles.
If you prefer lightness and versatility, choose technical sunglasses.

At Andar Sports Andorra, we’ll help you find the perfect model — fitted to your helmet, your face and your mountain lifestyle.
